Much of my inspiration for new cocktails comes from the produce department and my garden. Both the Raspberry Jalapeno Margarita and the Tomato Basil Cocktail were inspired by the garden. The strawberry margaritas came from the produce department. The same was true for this clementine margarita recipe.
This drink was inspired by the bags and bags of clementines at the grocery store right now. Every store I went to had them on the shelves. I just couldn’t resist. Clementines, a cross between mandarins and regular sweet oranges, are usually in season from October to February. Eaten plain, clementines are a tasty treat. In this clementine margarita recipe they are even better. Plus you won’t have to share with the kids. And that’s always winning in my book.
Classic margaritas are made with tequila, triple sec, and lime. But this is no classic. So instead of using triple sec, we used St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur. The floral notes of the elderflower liqueur pairs nicely with the sweetness of the clementines.
Plus it’s a beautiful drink with the orange colors. Takes you back to the fun of summer while you are stuck in the dead of winter. For some other really pretty clementine cocktails, check out the clementine martini and the clementine gin cocktail.
3 fresh squeezed clementines
2 ounces Silver Tequila
1 ounce St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
1/2 fresh squeezed lime
Lime wedge for garnish
Optional: margarita salt
If desired, rim margarita glass with lime and dip in margarita salt and then fill the glass with ice.
Cut clementines in half, remove seeds, and juice them into a cocktail shaker.
Add tequila, elderflower liqueur and fresh squeezed lime.
Shake with ice and strain into a margarita glass.
Garnish with lime wedge.
Makes 1 margarita.
