Recently my husband informed me he likes bourbon.
With a liquor cabinet full of vodka and tequila I was a little bothered trying to figure out where I was going to put more bottles of alcohol. After a couple of hours of clearing out dishes (yes, I really had to do this) and a trip to the liquor store I was ready to allow him to drink bourbon.
Of course, he wanted me to whip up some cocktails with his new bottle of bourbon so I started with this classic Old Fashioned drink.
Why did I start with a classic you ask?
Well…because my husband also smokes a pipe so I thought pipe smoking while sipping an Old Fashioned would be perfect for the old man he is turning into.
Note…it’s not a requirement that you smoke a pipe while drinking this libation. I do suggest though that you purchase quality bourbon for this drink since it is the main ingredient and you don’t want to drink bad whisky.
Old Fashioned
Ingredients
2 ounces Bourbon Whisky
1 sugar cube
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Ice
1 orange wedge
1 lemon wedge
1 maraschino cherry
Splash of water
Preparation
Drop a sugar cube into the bottom of a rocks glass and put 2 dashes of Angostura bitters on top of the cube. Mash the sugar cube with a muddler until completely broken down and then rotate the glass to coat the bottom in sugar.
Add ice cubes and then the bourbon with a splash of water.
Garnish with orange wedge, lemon wedge, and maraschino cherry.
Makes 1 Old Fashioned Cocktail
Cheers!

An even better Old Fashioned recipe from Bourbon Bar in Atlanta, GA:
2 oz Bulleit Rye
3/4 oz Simple Syrup
2 dashes Fee Bros Black Walnut Bitters
4 drops Bitter Cube Orange Bitters
Stir and serve over a single large ice cube.
It’s a manly drink and deserves not to contain fruit.

Hi Robert! Thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe.
Oh my gosh, this drink so reminds me of family get togethers. My Grandpa always had one of these during Thanksgiving. Love the pipe in the background!
I’m glad this drink brings back good memories for you!
